As was brought up in the ‘watch me divide by zero’ thread, attempting to use “real world” examples to disprove mathematics is completely ridiculous. Nobody is saying $100 to Bill Gates is the same “time value” as $100 to someone else, but YES, the $100 are mathematically equivalent. Not only is the example incorrect, it is completely irrelevant, as you can’t apply a “real world” example to infinity. Also, how fucking pretentious did that guy have to be to lie about giving out a quiz, and then when giving the results completely twisting it? Asking if ‘100 equals 100’ and then saying ‘wow they are all stupid because 100 dollars to me doesnt feel the same as 100 to bill gates’.
If you want to say .999… is NOT equal to one (in ANY sense), you have to have a final 9 somewhere at the end of the number. Then and only then is there a number between the one you gave and the number 1. But if that was the case, you would not write .999…; you’d write .999…9 (with the … having a finite number of 9s it represents)
