Anyone have experience with changing ESNs?

Just curious here. I was considering buying an old droid or droid 2 global as a test, but I was wondering if anyone here has ever messed around with changing the ESN on android cdma phones. i wonder if itll work on newer phones, or if theyve found ways to block it. Not to do anything illegal, just move my own phones around across cdma networks. Hypothetically speaking of course

You should be able to just call any provider and have them activate your phone. I donā€™t know that it is possible to change ESNs at all, is it?

From what Iā€™ve found online researching, with some phones itā€™s possible. I often see people who have a htc evo that has been flashed to boost, or a samsung epic flashed to virgin. The process, as far as i know, is to take the esn off of a dummy phone and place it onto your phone. The details of how that is done vary from phone to phone. However, the motorola smartphones are notoriously hardā€¦ Iā€™ve found one possible way that supposedly works for the droid x, where it is edited in memory at boot. It might work on the droid 1, but Iā€™m not entirely sure.
The reason I ask is because my provider has shit phones unless you buy their top of the line ones, and not very much to offer with a physical keyboard.

You can just buy a sim and use it in any phone where you are?

That is GSM, we are talking about CDMA phones.

meant cant* hehe, so i guess the answer is no. weird. must be annoying

i do envy you europeans, your htc one x will be quad-core while ours will be only dualā€¦ but htc is shit anyways
i am excited for that 1.5 ghz nexus, doubt it will top the s3 though, which no doubt youā€™ll get before us (although, if the epic 4g touch is any indication, our version might be slightly more powerful)
but what am i saying, i canā€™t afford those phones :frowning:
