Avoiding legal action

How to have a cheating community without threats of legal action?

Someone suggested basically having the entire community on IRC, and that seems like a feasible option to me. Except then there’s a problem of where to host files, etc. Maybe a private SVN? But such a project would have to be inherently closed to only a few people.

Is some way to spread cheating to the masses without being sued?

Perhaps an IRC bot that will give a set explanation of certain processes? Like “Define: something” in Google, but more elaborate.

Stay within the law and ignore threats?

You could have an IRC channel then just have a (small) private forum, paste bin, image&general hosting for its users.

Law is complicated though and nobody really knows its entirety, and even then it’s convoluted by case law / judicial activism changing the law / etc. If we had a clearly-labelled box of law it would be a lot easier.

right but then we’d live in utopia, nothing is ever clearcut with law

it’s easy enough to stay within it enough that you have no real reason to be scared of anyone though

Yeah, but even then they can still threaten to sue you, and even if they don’t have a case, you’ll lose money for lawyers, etc.

Sue you for what? They can only be so frivolous, at least in UK courts.

I think it’d be great to get taken to court with an absolutely frivolous claim. I’d represent myself and value my time at something like $100 - $200 an hour. Basically that of a lower end lawyer. And then I’d motion for the plaintiff to pay my legal fees.

Jagex have only just taken Nexus/iBot to court, and they filed the case in America because their lawyers probably knew it wouldn’t stand in the UK. So, don’t worry too much about the threats, they wont make too many examples of people. It costs them too much, especially to do outside of the country. Plus Ruler’s been at it for years and they’ve only now decided to take legal action, baring in mind they’ve not gone this far with any other cheating sites.

But ruler’s stuff is also entirely closed source, AND he used jagex’s pictures and such that were copyrighted, AND he sells everything. Really only using copyrighted images seems illegal to me, but what do I know.

Anyway, as long as you don’t host jagex’s code or intellectual property, then there shouldn’t be any problem with the law or lawsuits against you. And there really isn’t any reason to host their code, when it is so easy for your bot to download their code and change it like you need on the client’s computer.

They probably wanted to make a statement by suing Ruler anyways, as a scare tactic. As Greeny said, it costs a lot, and you’re suing the average Joe, which isn’t good for your image either. They aren’t losing that much money, and it’s not like cheaters are making a living by selling their bots.

well, ruler was :stuck_out_tongue:

Lol, Ruler was probably making quite the living. I imagine he’s sitting on a mini gold mine.

Maybe I should clarify. We don’t host modified versions of jagex’s code. Those are just archives of things freely available to everyone from jagex’s website at some point.

Seems like they’ve changed how they store the version in the client, because your script seems to have broken.

The latest one is 627, so it still looks like it’s working.
