if anyone wants to start this up, i am free as a resource to answer technical questions. i don’t think i can really devote a lot of time to it as i work full time.
suggestion: perhaps have a section dedicated to ideas about the project

Out of curiosity, what exactly does a community server accomplish?
Let me rephrase, in your opinions, what is the best outcome of a community server.

It brings purpose to the site which, in turn, brings interest and members.

Couldn’t that lead to potential lawsuits etc?

Mopar’s pretty straightforward with how he handles Jagex’s threats. He’s been hosting different RS caches and their client publicly for years. A server is probably the least “IP-violation” of whole scene, so it’s not like he’s going to be in any “additional” legality “trouble” if we have a community server. Besides that, we’re not going to be directly profiting off of it.
Would hiring a team of developers be out of the question?
Depends on what you mean by hire…
I mean like in-community hire.
because paying members to develop a private server has been successful in the past… OSIRIS?

Let’s get money out of the picture.

This topic needs more attention.
Why exactly are we so anti-money? To me, it looks like a bunch of have nots complaining about the few haves.
The reality at the end of the day is that I disagree with paying someone a sum of money to deliver something in the future. But I absolutely don’t, and wouldn’t ever, begrudge someone for monetising their server if they run it as a service.
How else are they supposed to pay for things like hosting? And why spend hours a day developing something innovative, as far as this community is concerned, with little or no reward?

I think jagex would have to disagree with your logic when you are making money off their work.
We already know that they disagree with communities like this one entirely; that’s given.
My question is concerned with people here who express anti-monetisation sentiments. I know that the more successful RSC servers have to use hosting with DOS mitigation, and this hosting has cost anywhere up to 500 GBP per month according to KO9. That’s roughly $750 AUD, or $775 USD, per month. It has to come from somewhere.
