Dealing with a community server
We already know that they disagree with communities like this one entirely; that’s given.

My question is concerned with people here who express anti-monetisation sentiments. I know that the more successful RSC servers have to use hosting with DOS mitigation, and this hosting has cost anywhere up to 500 GBP per month according to KO9. That’s roughly $750 AUD, or $775 USD, per month. It has to come from somewhere.
ads? donations?

The ads are unlikely to produce $750 a month.
Subscription based approaches seem to work well, because they’re usually affordable (at least in the RSC scene, where most players are either nearing or already in their twenties) and, most importantly, recurring.

To be honest with you, I actually see subscription-based business models in this scene as the best approach, because they’re transparent - everybody knows what they’re getting (typically an experience bonus).

Which was why people were disagreeing with it, because it’s supposed to be a ‘community’ server. I also agree that if it’s a community developed server we shouldn’t be paying people to do the work for us, as doesn’t that somewhat defeat the purpose? :o

Anywho, on the subject of monetization, I have nothing against people asking for (or developing ways) to generate enough money to keep the server going and maybe make them enough money to justify the time they spend working on the server. It’s when people botch administration or game quality just to milk as much profit as they can per month that it starts to get on my nerves. An example could be in 99% of the current popular RSPS’s where people sell items that give other people an advantage over others.

My suggestion was offering monetary rewards for those who contribute the most. It’s not a payment, it’s a reimbursement of time (it’s a matter of contract for the difference). Just because you help out doesn’t mean you’ll get paid, but it’s nice to know you might. That’s also a way to guarantee we will get more development activity and better quality code.

Who would be willing to start the development officially though?

I hope anyone takes the initiative to get the ball rolling. I would, but I don’t have the time.
I would, but I don’t have the time.
age old but valid excuse. sigh

I know this thread has been dead for a while, but I actually kind of like the idea of a community server. Looking past all the money problems, I think the development model of giving different people different levels of access to the server would be the best route to go. Like let the experts take care of the core with the networking, protocol, etc, and let users only develop scripts that cannot screw up the server.

I do have some good experience with the engine development (from RuneRebels), but I was the one who developed all of the code, even for the content. I had others fill in data (such as in the database) for things like skills, Npc dialogues, etc, which could also be something that we could have regular users do. Someone would probably want to verify the information they put in though, so we wouldn’t end up with like men dropping party hats.

The main issue is just the time to put in. If you’re interested or have ideas, send me a pm and we can shoot the bull a bit.

Taharok, haven’t you completed the core of the community server?

Nope, I haven’t found enough time to. We’re moving to a plan b with that, though.

Is this whole idea a priority?

Should be.

in recent news: i’ve set off to document the entire #377 protocol with the help of c`p’s refactor. i have no plans to share if publicly, but when i’m done a few lucky ones can have it if wanted.

Post it in this section. Considering his refactor was a result of a conglomeration of contributions in this section, there’s no reason not to post it here. :stuck_out_tongue:

i’ll consider it, especially since it would be nice having someone eyeball it to make sure i didn’t make any moronic mistakes.

nothing makes it far in the private server scene unless it involves people being paid

to much money to be made for a bunch of people to contribute to a open source project over a long period of time on good faith nobody is going to take it and make thousands

players do not care who owns the code. if someone puts it up, accepts donations for rewards in game, they will make bank

This is why no one has complete access to any of my source code for my projects; If you have a problem and fire a developer, they go and leak your entire project, or take it for themselves.

Why you’re working with those type of people in the first place is beyond me.
