Need USB to PS/2 Adapter

Do these exist? I haven’t been able to find one that lets me connect a USB-only keyboard to a PS/2 port on a computer. It needs to be active, because this isn’t a dual-mode keyboard that comes with those little wire-only adapters.

this?

is that really that hard to find ?

if you get a non-shit USB keyboard they come with the adapters anyway. I’ve got like 4.

No. This is a passive adapter that has no circuitry in it, it simply adapts the shape of the plug, and if the keyboard doesn’t support falling back to the PS/2 protocol (mine doesn’t) it won’t work.

Which is why I need an active adapter with some sort of microprocessor or other circuitry in it to convert the actual USB protocol into PS/2 protocol.

The same thing applies to mwiebelhaus’s link, any ideas?

They don’t exist as far as my knowledge goes mainly because they would have to charge over 10+ for something that is not needed much. You can probably use an arduino or an msp430 and write the code yourself, I don’t know anything about the protocol so I cant do it without researching it

Just get a better keyboard…

Arduino is extreme overkill for this…

You could go with a very low-end PIC: 8-bit, some have USB support (so you wouldn’t have to do that part yourself).
These look perfect, and they’re extremely low power, though I’m not sure if you can buy them yet.

why dont you just get a new keyboard for $3 that either has a PS/2 port or a USB port that supports the PS/2 protocol?

I did write a PS/2 to USB type adapter using a Teensy++ I had here:

And actually, I want to use the same thing because it supports hardware qwerty -> dvorak conversion, which is why I’m looking for a USB -> PS/2 adapter.

@Different keyboard, I’m open to that, but I haven’t found any like I need. I need a smaller one (usually without a number pad) that will fit in a briefcase/laptop bag, and I’d like it to be wireless like the one I just bought is. I haven’t been able to locate one like that which supports PS/2.

:stuck_out_tongue: I have one, they are nice.

Expensive if bought separately from a Mac, though! It is a rather nice keyboard to type on though.

But, being a Mac, it doesn’t support PS/2 does it? Which defeats the whole purpose (I need PS/2 support).

Actually that looks fine, but amazon says it’s out of stock and no idea when it will be back in stock if ever.

Eek, cheapest price is $39 + $18 shipping. Maybe I’ll just get a cheap wired PS/2 one from newegg, though the reviews are very questionable.

I can only assume bad reviews because people will compare them to usb keyboards which have a longer range and are generally newer.
