New server

So I was chatting with one of the local Linux groups in my area about server stuff and it eventually turned into this “boast about your machine” bullshit conversation. I ended up stating my machine, with a lot of laughs towards me, then some guy basically said “i’ll give you this machine we’re getting rid of at work which has a moderate amount of horsepower” and i was like okay. so I picked it up, and by god it’s not only wicked loud in my room but it’s REALLY FAST. So I basically got the entire server wiped clean, setup Arch Linux and viola. Now I have a new server at home.

It’s a Dell PowerEdge SC1435.

I’m not sure what to do with it other than what I currently use my server for (web development). Any ideas?

You got it for free?

use it to distribute moparscape auths

It can’t be too awful powerful if the script you linked to won’t even load.

Those screamers are fucking horrible outside of a data-center where obviously displacement > noise - get some new ones if you can or just remove a few and run it without a top cover.

It’s also a great way to keep my room cool during the summer, as I have found out through the first (reasonably) hot day that the server has had to live through in my room.

A server which produces heat keeps your room cool?

This is the cause of so many “death by orange juice” type electronic deaths in my house. I do not recommend this solution if you’re a clumsy fuck.

PDP-11/23 is best at kicking off heat… ALL AT 12MHZ!!!

Yep these rack mount servers are cuntishly loud. I had one and I swapped out the two loud fans for one 6 inch fan. Did wonders.

You will realize its useless, I got a Dell Poweredge 2650 for free once from my aunt, ended up selling it for about $250. Was going to try to run my home server on it but it was so fucking loud, huge, ugly, these things are useless unless you are going to use them for their intended purpose.

That’s what I do with the 1U Supermicro server I built and currently run in my house, it had a single fan that, even from the shut closet in my shut computer room could be heard all over the house. I took off the top cover, took out that fan and put the stock Intel cooler over the heatsink, it’s much quieter and runs fine.
