Buying myself a Christmas gift early…So why not another build…

My small worry is that I’ve never picked out my own choice of parts before…Clients usually tell me what I get and I build.

http://secure.newegg.ca/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=15365031

My price-range was 1500(Pretty close). Anybody have suggestions for better parts or Ideas of what I should get?

It’s mostly for gaming if you never noticed.

the retail version of the cpu does come with a cooler but the stock coolers for this gen are absolutely pathetic, you may as well not even use it so I suggest that you get yourself a nice 4 pin/PWM capable cpu cooler(you’ll see why in a bit) and swap the retail for the oem and save the few bucks for some beer

if you want to save money, get 2 sticks of this ram and save $50, the sandy bridge series is notorious for not needing decent ram, you can get ridiculous clock speeds if you overclock while on the worse 1600 ddr3 ram you can buy

oh and if you’re not doing any video editing or anything extremely cpu intensive(that absolutely needs the 8 hyperthreads over 4) then the i5-2500k gives the same performance in most games, and don’t worry about future proofing, good quad cores from 4 years ago are still decent cpus today for most things and the i5-2500k/i7-2600k will last for years before ever needing an upgrade

my personal qualms with the P8Z68-V is that it has no PS/2 slot, and the fan headers on the mobo can only control the speed of 4 pin fans and you can’t control the voltage of fans meaning 3 pin fans run at fixed max speeds

if you’re just getting the case for the looks ignore this, but it looks like it is going to get so dusty so quickly, I had an antec 900 and I had to clean it out every week compared to my new case with fan filters that is as clean as it was when I built it 2 months ago

for the gfx card I suggest getting a rebranded 570 with 2 fans, the card will be cooler and will make less noise (I currently have a msi 570 twin frozr iii oc, I only notice the fans if I manually overclock to 580 speeds)

oh, wireless mice tend to be really, really bad especially in games, they’re still usable but you’ll notice the difference immediately when you switch to a half decent wired mouse

other than that it will work fine

Do you actually still think wireless mice are inferior to wired mice nowadays? I haven’t been able to notice a difference between them for years now.

Thanks for the info. I’m gonna be looking into that ram instead; wasn’t really sure, mostly reading the customer reviews for anything I’ve been adding. The Case I chose so I don’t have to go heavy into the water-cooling; since it has tons of fans and somewhat open frame, Cleaning doesn’t bother me as I usually clean my current Towers every two/three weeks. The CPU I chose high so I wouldn’t be upgrading often and I’ll be already pushing this thing to it’s limits.

Could you link me a example of a Re-branded Card?

Hey Mopar long time no see, was hoping you would comment on my build…

I’ve been using Wired/Wireless mouses for years and have noticed almost no change; or not enough to actual cause performance issues.

rebranded was a bad term on my part, evag is a rebranded card since it isn’t the reference 570 from nvidia

all those have multiple fans but the asus is 3 slots wide, probably not the best idea

the way the P8Z68 is designed means you’ll lose a pcix16x1 AND a regular pci slot with a 570, or at least with the msi 570

ps you won’t need water cooling unless you’re going to be seriously overclocking, my noctua nh-d14 keeps my 2500k below 40-50c while running prime 95 even with voltages and clock increased to 4.4ghz

I can only speak from personal experience but my 2 yr old wireless mouse had a slight noticeable lag, but then again I can’t play any first person game with mouse acceleration either but it is a personal thing

Thanks for the additional info. I ended up choosing http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125384 thanks to the price. I’m going to look into a cooler you said earlier just incase but with how the case is I’m not sure if I actually need it. Suggestions?

Well now I’m gonna go through again to make sure everything fits in the case.

you’ll still need a decent cpu cooler even with a dozen case fans, the bigger the heatsink is the more effectively it will be able to draw heat from the cpu, and as it happens the stock coolers for the i5-2500k and i7-2600k are pathetically small, twice as small in fact as the stock cooler for the q6600 from a few years back

many people tend to get temps in the high 60c range with the stock cooler on the 2600k, this isn’t too high but any half-decent 3rd party cooler will do much better than this

the nh-d14 is an absolute beast by the way, but because of the 3 pin fans it will only run at fixed speed on the P8Z68, I’m using the resistor cables at the minute and it’s running at 900/900rpm and it is fairly quiet

Thing is freakin huge. I wouldn’t even be sure if that would fit in my case.

:expressionless: Guess I should really look into it.

Anything else?

Sweet.

I also got confirmation that the cpu cooler fits; which was my biggest worry. http://extreme.pcgameshardware.de/members/rabensang-albums-review-antec-lanboy-air-3835-picture371776-img-7956-kopie.jpg

That thing is ridiculously huge, i probably couldn’t fit it due to cooling blocks on the motherboard

Well I was thinking of taking out a fan on the Lan-boy tower if I have too.

Looks unnecessarily huge. Do you live in a warm climate? As mentioned before your CPU should be sufficient to power your games so it doesn’t look like you’ll be overclocking. I think that cooler is overkill and costly.

btw my i7 2600 hasn’t exceeded 63C on high load and stock clocks.

It’s extremely warm during the Summer. And Extremely cold during the Winter.

Was also planning over-clocking it.

PS at high resolutions cpu barely matters at all. A low end dual-core AMD at 2.6ghz will give you the exact same FPS as an i7 2600k.

So would I need the cpu cooler?

I really would recommend something better than the stock cooler, the Nh-D14 is overkill but you can get plenty of $40-60 coolers that are much better than stock.

The Thermaltake Frio is a fairly decent cooler and it’s only $60. A few degrees warmer than the Nh-D14 but much better than stock.

It’s huge but it does have a lot of clearance off the board. PS, they have a nifty guide showing what ram is compatible.

With the Nh-D14 with both fans at 900rpm, at stock(3.7ghz/1.115 volts) my temps are never higher than 45c under load and oced to 4.5ghz with 1.300 volts and running prime95 for 20 minutes the temps were stable around 55-60c for all cores. Compare that to 86c/63c Speljohan and Radeon get with stock coolers on stock volts. (I know they both have the 2600k and I only have the 2500k but the chips have very similar temps)

After reading the reviews for it I decided to go with that. I really wans’t sure if the D14 would fit.

Someone told me I should just go liquid cooling.
