Ubuntu USB install problem

My friend just gave me a little Packard Bell notebook which I’m trying to get Ubuntu on to. There’s no disk drive so I’m trying to install via USB drive. I’ve correctly loaded the USB drive with the iso using both uNetbootin and the Universal USB Creator, and I get in to the same problem each time.

When I reboot and try to boot from the USB, it seems to say something about SYSLINUX on the command line, but only appears for a few seconds, and then I am shown the name, build number of the Intel BIOS, and then it just hangs. Any suggestions, need Linux on this laptop asap

Thanks!!!

well without knowing the error, this situation is pretty vague. try using a different distro?

Yeah, that’s really all the info I have on what’s going wrong. Any ideas how to get some more?

I’m trying Ubuntu 10.04 to see if an earlier version will work.

Is it a Packard Bell Dot S? I bought one of these last weekend, installed ubuntu 11.10 without a hitch from USB.

Yeah it is a small Dot S.

Never got 11.10 to work but now running 10.04 fine.

get a external dvd drive then try it?
