Because someone told them, a bit funny how the same day this happens we get reported to my host for supposedly hosting a botnet on our IRC.
You should just offer a link to the bot on your site, so long as you don’t actually host anything apart from the forums and home pages you can not get prosecuted. Though I am no lawyer

Evidence about what? It isn’t illegal to mess with the client for educational purposes and for no profit, so what could they possibly have on you? Shutting down on the first letter is a dumb move anyhow, not only is there no reason for you to shut down, but it also makes it seem like you are doing something wrong. (unless you were doing something blatantly wrong, I don’t know how you did things)
