I vouch for sending Newty to London. He definitely has a knowledge of the RS client that is far superior to anyone on this site.
Runefest 2011 Botting Session
Ahahahah not even close. But I’m probably the least anti social of everyone here. I could take an agenda of questions and topics compiled by the members of this board.
Up to everyone else here though. My votes still with speljohan

Anyways, @ Greeny: I wouldn’t promote cheating anywhere if i went obviously. The idea would be to see if an interesting discussion could be created.
Im social! You guys would just have to IRC me whilst debating it!
We should at least have someone record the session in some way.
Despite my proximity to the event (like 6 miles away), I can’t see myself being a good representative even if it was all paid for, since I have little technological knowledge or interest in the game now.
ps, im a moron
If I had 9999 time I’d consider going for shits and giggles.
Greeny seems to like to talk and is good at debating, and he lives in england, what about him going?
Ha, like I said I said in a previous post I actually had previous opportunities to talk to Mark Gerhard (although not about Runescape, and only on IRC/Forums) and I find the guy a tad annoying - his tendency to fabricate Jagex’s intentions for the future of a game I play somewhat pissed me off.
Seriously if anyone does go you want to find engine/client developers to talk to. As they are the ones who write the code, and will probably be interested in our opinions and knowledge of the client (since it’s their code we’re reverse engineering and they have no reason to hate us). Thus intelligent discussion could potentially come of it.
In case of Mark G, or anyone associated with the business side of things, they’re only going to lay down the hate because obviously we are the ones who have cost them significant investment in antimacro detection and probably caused them to have to employ additional support workers for the increase in abuse reports and ban appeals (amongst other things). Those business minded guys wouldn’t take to kindly if you catch my drift (nor I imagine would the Jagex legal dept).
Equally anyone associated with RuneScript would be utterly useless as they probably know hogwash about the client or engine. Incidentally most programmers are antisocial so the chances of them being present at RuneFest I would imagine are somewhat bleak, and the abundance of PR people is far more likely.
That said I would go simply for the attempt to initiate such conversation, I guess it’s worth a shot. Unfortunately I’m in northern England and also have (some) work commitments, so it depends how it would fit around my daily schedule.
I’d go off my own back if I was ever one for botting, but I’m not/isn’t.
This is a PR event, plain and simple. I read an article a while ago which I can’t seem to find anymore that went into detail about how once an MMO reaches a certain capacity it becomes cheaper and easier to use non-technical means to combat TOS violations, ie basically make the players work for you while also paying you - what business wouldn’t want that? All they will be trying to do is raising awareness and reinforcing their “reporting” tools because it is a significantly cheaper alternative compared to developing and testing technical client modifications, while also keeping the botters income.
The elephant in the room will be bots actually contribute a fairly large amount of revenue for jagex as the player base and demand for virtual goods increases, bots and such deliver quite a bit of value to the in game economy to meet the demand.
As someone said, it would probably be much more interesting to go and see if you could get a face-to-face with someone behind the scenes, rather than make yourself public enemy #1 in a room full of their target audience (cough) and PR people.
Greeny, see if you can work it around your schedule and let me know, I’d love to send you there and get a nice report.
Hidden camera or mic please…
Bump as I wish to know if this is actually happening. It would really be beneficial!
Greeny, are you free!!!?!
The problem with that is that unless you pick the right person, it’s too easy for them to just leave. Gower would probably just be like NOPE IM NOT TALKING ABOUT THAT and slink off.

We should go as well!
Greeny needs backup!
