[Tutorial] Creating basic neon lights

You can use this for many things such as Lightsabers or even vectoring it around someone or thing.
I’m just going to open a fresh canvas 600wx500h no particular. You don’t have to but I’m going to use a black background so you can see the neon better.

Step one: Grab the pen tool which is right next or above the text tool.

Step two: Make a new layer by holding CTRL, SHIFT and then press ‘N’. Draw onto the canvas to minipulate what you want the source of the neon to look like. Basically give it the shape making sure you have the pen tool selected. It should look somewhat like this.

Step Three: Now you’re going to want to select your brush tool and choose the default brush preset (normal circle no feather). And make the size around 3. Now select the pen tool again and right click what you had just drawn on the canvas, making sure that your layer is highlighted. Click stroke path, make sure the tool is Brush and then click okay. Now you can right click it once more and click Delete Path. It should look like this.

Step Four: Now right click your layer. Your layer should be at the bottom right of the program. Then hit Blending Options… The two main effects you want to tick is Outer Glow and Gradient Overlay.
Outer Glow - Gives it the real neon feel. It brings it to life
Gradient Overlay - Isn’t really needed but can be good just to give it extra pop.

This is what it looks like in the end

Now you may be thinking. Is that it? I did say basic right. But you can wriggle a few things around and get a real nice glow. This is a small example of what you can do.

So be creative and glow you later. Lol I make myself laugh

Great tutorial, will be using this

So simple, but can be used to create an awesome effect.

Thanks, was just asking though cause design and gimp look kinda the same as you can see in this screenie(see it looks similar;o).

Also, I never do graphics;p.

In CS6 how would i set the brush tool default preset??

i get confused at step 3… using CS6

i dont think you can do that with CS6, but you can always JUST use the brush instead of the pen

What program are you using?

Paint

He is using photoshop, it’s very expensive. So f you are interested in starting to get into graphics try gimp or a trial version of photoshop :3

The rules don’t say anything about promoting illegally downloaded versions. Just look up on YouTube how to download Photoshop what ever version for free, you’ll come across something.

I’ve never used CS6 but in CS5 you select your brush tool and in the options at the top their is a drop down box arrow thing. Click it and there should be another arrow within the a box that just popped up, open that arrow and choose “Basic Brushes”.

I just went with this when following the tutorial:

I was wondering were did you get the texture on the neon light because it look like a cool effect and I might be thinking of using it for something later?

It’s a brush I believe you make a new piece and it’s 6x6 pixels and take the pencil tool and go diagonal and save it as something. Can’t really remember.

Epic bro, im going to try this

Looks really nice
